About Astbury MereA Jewel in Congleton's Crown
The country park occupies an area which was an old sand quarry that ceased production in the 1980’s. The beautiful country park we have today holds little clues to its industrial past, you can read all about the park’s history and how it was rescued from developers’ hands by a team of determined locals. Today committed volunteers in the Astbury Mere Trust look after the park for the enjoyment of everyone.
Astbury Mere Trust
Astbury Mere Country Park is owned by Astbury Mere Trust and managed on their behalf by Cheshire East Ranger Service.
The Trust is constantly looking at ways to improve the Park and Community Centre, for example lrepairing paths, renewing the woodland, providing seating, and making the Park accessible for all.
The Trust is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status and was established in 1989, it relies on public donations to ensure the long term viability of the park and to continue to improve the enjoyment of the local community, and many thousands of visitors every year.
Astbury Mere Country Park encompasses almost 40 acres of open space, just ten minutes walk from the town centre, with paths linking into the local countryside. It is close to the edge of the Peak District National Park.
The park is a natural bowl surrounding a lake which is owned by a local fishing society. As well as areas of grassland for public recreation there are also areas managed specifically for nature conservation including ponds and woodland areas surrounded by grassland and shrubs .
The park contains Congleton’s first community orchard, which was created with help from local residents and schools.
A wheelchair friendly path has been built around the lake that is enjoyed by thousands of people all year round. Great views of the Cheshire Staffordshire borders, including Mow Cop, Cloud End and Congleton Edge.

Meet The Astbury Mere Team
The Trust owes a debt of gratitude to some Congletonians for their unselfish and unstinting support from when the original Action Group was formed in the early eighties. Sadly some volunteers are no longer with us but their legacy lives on in a small way in the continuation of Astbury Mere for all to enjoy. Thanks to our current volunteers who are responsible for running and upkeep of Astbury Mere today.
