Astbury Water Sports Centre is the location in Congleton offering various water sports from canoeing and kayaking to sailing and raft building. With so much to choose from, we’re more than happy to deliver your perfect water or land-based pursuit. Activities include:
Abseiling, Bush Craft Skills, Canoeing, Children’s Parties, Fire Building, Kata-Kanuing, Kayaking, Orienteering, Outdoor Climbing, Problem Solving, Raft Building, Rocket Launching, Sailing, Shelter Building, Survival Skills, Team Building & Weaseling.

Congleton Park Run
It is a 5km run – it’s you against the clock. The event is held at Astbury Mere Country Park every Saturday morning at 9.00 am
If you can walk or cycle to the park, please do so. If you must drive, please follow the marshalls’ instructions and try to avoid causing inconvenience to the local residents, avoiding the road junctions on Sandy Lane.
What does it cost to join in?
Nothing – it’s free! But please register before you first come along. Only ever register with Parkrun once. Don’t forget to bring a printed copy of your barcode.
How fast do I have to be?
We all run for our own enjoyment. Please come along and join in whatever your pace!

Stoke-on-Trent Anglers
Astbury Mere is the Society’s only owned water, having been purchased in 2002. The water is a shared amenity with a sailing club who hold a lease with Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society.
The lake is known to contain good stocks of carp, perch, pike, and roach. The Society was instrumental in a previous stocking in 1988, when roach, bream, common and mirror carp from the Capesthorne Estate were stocked. The former owners stocked over 300 Carp from a southern fish farm, some of the fish coming from Woburn Abbey. Thousands of fish have been added over recent years with more planned for the future. The water is beautiful, and many swims offer easy access. The depths range from a few feet in the shallows to 50 feet out in the middle. Visit the SOTAS website for fishing membership.

The Dog Father
Vic Barlow aka ‘The Dog Father’ holds regular Dog Training classes for agility training and behaviour issues.
Many owners of otherwise obedient dogs tell us they have trouble maintaining obedient behaviour on walks. Dogs that will come when called in the garden often go deaf when they meet other dogs. Walking quietly to heel is often a problem in a more distracting outdoor environment.
In response to many requests, we run Outdoor classes where we can demonstrate how to transfer good obedience work into the real world. Astbury Mere is the location of our Saturday morning class. Please visit the website for more information.

Walking
Easy Access Trail
The lakeside path around Astbury Mere is suitable for pushchairs and independent wheelchairs. A pre-booked manual wheelchair is available from the Ranger Service.
Cross the car park and enter the site at the entrance by the noticeboard. Bear right and follow the lakeside path to complete a circuit of the lake. There is seating every 100m along the path. Allow about 40 minutes to walk the circular route around the mere.

Community Orchard
Created with help from local residents and Congleton Sustainability Group, part of The Congleton Partnership. The orchard was originally planted by local school children who celebrated the launch by acting out ‘The Tale of the Orchard’, a story written especially for the site by local author Louise Renn.
Astbury Mere is also a collection point for Congleton Apple Juice, freshly pressed and made at The Old Saw Mill. Donations are welcome if you have any apples that can be utilised!

Dog walkers are very welcome at Astbury Mere. The site offers plenty of opportunities for you to exercise your dog (and yourself!) all year round.
To make sure your visit is safe and that others may enjoy their activities we ask that all dog walkers keep their dogs on a lead where sign posted and adhere to the site’s Code of Conduct. Download Here.
